Nautilus Pompilius

Nautilus Pompilius

The shawl is worked sideways, tier by tier, from the center spiral to the edges.  The beauty of this construcion is that the same amount of CC is used in all tiers; that allows you to perfectly match colors of selfstriping yarn, creating interesting “shadow” effect with it.

This pattern in German is available as a part of knitting kits at garnmanufactur.com

Techiques used: garter, picking-up stitches from the edge, and, mostly short rows.

Size:The shawl drops 60 cm, about 150cm across  + the angle, that drapes around beautifully.

Materials.

- 4.0 or 4.5mm circular needles.

- fingering- or sport-weight yarn: 400m of bright-colored yarn. You can use various solids or selfstriping yarn. This shawl is constructed in such a way that the amount of bright yarn in all three tires of the same sector is the same; that allows you to exactly match the colors from top to bottom. I used Versper sock merino in Prisma colorway.

- as about the main color (shown black). I used almost exactly 600 meters (150g). However, it is a little risky to have just 600 meters for this shawl, as you might end up being a few meters short. I suggest that you have 2 full 400m/100g skeins  of main color.
